Indigenous Studies 

NAC1O1 Expressing Expressions of Indigenous Cultures, Grade 9 (Open)

This course explores various Indigenous art forms (media arts, music, dance, drama, storytelling, visual art, installation and performance art, clothing design, and architectural design), giving students the opportunity to create, present, and analyse integrated art works infused with Indigenous perspectives. Students will examine relationships between art forms and individual and cultural identities, histories, and values. Students will demonstrate innovation as they learn and apply art-related concepts, styles, and conventions and acquire skills that are transferable beyond the classroom. Students will use the creative process and responsible practices to explore solutions to integrated arts challenges.

NAC2O1 Indigenous Peoples in Canada, Grade 10 (Open)

This course explores the histories of Indigenous peoples in Canada from precontact to the present day. Students will examine the impact of past social, cultural, economic, political, and legal trends and developments on Indigenous communities and individuals. Students will apply the concepts of historical thinking and the historical inquiry process to investigate a range of issues, events, and interactions that have affected Indigenous peoples, including those that continue to affect relations between Aboriginal peoples and other Canadians today.

NBE3U1 English: Contemporary Indigenous Voices, Grade 11 (University)

This course explores themes, forms, and stylistic elements of a range of literary, informational, graphic, oral, cultural, and media texts about and from Indigenous cultures in Canada. Students will analyse the changing use of text forms by Aboriginal authors from various periods and cultures to express themes such as identity, relationships, and sovereignty. Students will create oral, written, and media texts to explore their own ideas and understanding, focusing on the development of literacy, communication, and critical and creative thinking skills necessary for success in academic and daily life. The course is intended to prepare students for the compulsory Grade 12 English university or college preparation course.

Prerequisite: English, Grade 10, Academic

NBE3C1 English: Contemporary Indigenous Voices, Grade 11 (College)

This course explores themes, forms, and styles of literary, informational, graphic, oral, cultural, and media texts about and from Indigenous cultures in Canada. Students will study the use of text forms by Aboriginal authors from various periods and cultures to express themes such as identity, relationships, and sovereignty. Students will create oral, written, and media texts to explore their own ideas and understanding, focusing on the development of literacy, communication, and critical and creative thinking skills necessary for success in academic and daily life. The course is intended to prepare students for the compulsory Grade 12 English college preparation course.

Prerequisite: English, Grade 10, Academic or Applied

NBE3E1 English: Contemporary Indigenous Voices, Grade 11 (Workplace)

This course explores themes, forms, and stylistic elements of literary, informational, graphic, oral, cultural, and media texts about and from Indigenous cultures in Canada. Students will investigate the connections between texts and cultural and community aspects of identity, relationships, and sovereignty. Students will create oral, written, and media texts focusing on the development of literacy, communication, and critical thinking skills necessary for success in the workplace and daily life. The course is intended to prepare students for the compulsory Grade 12 English workplace preparation course.

Prerequisite: English, Grade 10, Academic or Applied

NDW4M - Contemporary Indigenous Issues and Perspectives in a Global Context, Grade 12, (University/College)

This course examines global issues from the perspectives of indigenous peoples. Students will explore the depth and diversity of indigenous cultures, traditions, and knowledge. Students will consider how diverse indigenous communities persevere despite current global environmental and economic trends, and will investigate topics such as identity, social justice, human rights and abuses, spirituality, resistance, and advocacy for change.

Prerequisite: Any Grade 11 University, University/College, or College Preparation course in First Nations, Métis and Inuit Studies or any Grade 11 University, University/College, or College Preparation course in Canadian and World Studies or any Grade 11 University, University/College, or College Preparation course in Social Sciences and Humanities
